Newton Man Arrested on Fugitive Warrant from Florida; More

23-year-old Dustin Lee Smith of Orangewood Lane in Newton was arrested by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers Friday (February 9) on a felony warrant as a fugitive awaiting extradition to another state. Smith was also charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretenses, four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, two counts of failure to return a hired motor vehicle valued at more than $4,000, two counts of failure to return rental property, and driving while license revoked. Smith is wanted by the Sheriff’s Office in Sumpter County, Florida for grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Following his arrest, Smith was placed in the Catawba County Detention Facility where he is being held without bond on the fugitive warrant. Bond on the other charges was set at $152,000. Appearances in District and Superior court were scheduled today (February 12) in Newton with another Catawba County District Court appearance scheduled for February 19. Smith will also appear in a Lincoln County courtroom on March 5 on the driving while license revoked charge.
