HIDDENITE, N.C. (WHKY) — Visitors to Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area can now better identify the mountain peaks surrounding the park thanks to newly installed overlook signs highlighting many of the prominent summits visible from its scenic overlooks.

According to Alexander County Government, the new educational signs connect the park’s panoramic mountain views with the surrounding landscape by identifying dozens of peaks visible from the overlooks.

Among the mountains identified are Crowders Mountain, The Pinnacle, Baker’s Mountain, Barrett’s Mountain, Little Roundtop, Hawksbill, Brown Mountain, Table Rock, Hickory Knob, Grandfather Mountain and the highest peaks of the Mississippi River watershed, including Mount Mitchell, the state’s highest peak.

The signs also provide information about the history, elevation and significance of the mountains visible from Rocky Face.

Parks Director Alex Streams said the new displays help visitors recognize landmarks that may have been familiar but previously difficult to identify from the overlooks.

Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area features more than five miles of hiking trails, a natural rock-climbing wall with dozens of routes, picnic shelters, an ADA-accessible walking trail, playground and scenic overlooks.

The park is located at 3451 Rocky Face Church Road in Hiddenite.
