New City Manager Named In Newton

Newton City Council today (April 5) has announced the appointment of Sean Hovis as Newton’s next city manager. According to a news release from the City of Newton, Hovis has demonstrated his commitment to Newton’s residents and businesses as assistant city manager for the past 10 years, and he is well-equipped to lead the city toward a bright future.

Newton hired Hovis in the combined position of assistant city manager and planning director in February 2013. During a decade of service to the city, Hovis has led day-to-day operations and long-range strategic planning for each of the city’s departments. His experience in budgeting, public safety, infrastructure revitalization, economic development, and community engagement demonstrate a proven track record of success.

Prior to joining the City of Newton, Hovis was employed by the City of Hickory as a police officer, investigator, and risk manager. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Lees-McRae College and a master’s degree in public administration from Appalachian State University.

Hovis serves on the board of directors for the Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority and the Rotary Club of Newton-Conover. He is a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church—LCMS. He and his wife, Wendy, have two adult children, Nick and Seana. Hovis will assume his new role as city manager on April 14.
