Mother And Son Killed In Monday Crash

A mother and son were killed in a crash in Lincoln County Monday (August 8). The deceased are 54-year-old Belinda Shrewsbury Baker and 10-year-old Michael Paul Baker, both of Vale. At approximately 2:15 p.m. Monday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to N.C. 27 near Asbury Church Road. A 1999 Nissan Sentra attempted to exit a parking lot and turn left onto N.C. 27. The Nissan failed to yield the right of way and collided with an eastbound 1992 GMC tractor-trailer on N.C. 27.

The driver of the Nissan, Belinda Shrewsbury Baker, passed away at the scene. The rear-seat passenger, Michael Paul Baker, was critically injured and transported by EMS to Atrium Health Lincoln, where he passed away. The front seat passenger, 59-year-old Glenn Baker, was seriously injured and transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. Michael was the son of Glenn and Belinda Baker.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a Maiden man, received minor injuries. The vehicle was owned by the North Carolina Forest Service. N.C. 27 was closed in the area for two hours during the on-scene investigation. All occupants of the Nissan were restrained by seatbelts. No charges are anticipated.
