Mother And Son Killed In Crash Previously Reported On WHKY, Investigation Continues
The names of the individuals who died following a reported chase and crash in Hickory have been released. They are 38-year-old Cynthia Nicole Lail and her son 12-year-old Michael Lail, both of Hickory.
As WHKY previously reported, on Friday, (September 8), at approximately 11:00 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to US 70 at 13th Street SW in Hickory. The Hickory Police Department was attempting to stop a motorcycle on US 70. During the pursuit, a 2020 Hickory Police Department Ford Explorer traveling west on US 70, entered the intersection and struck a 2011 Honda Odyssey traveling south through the intersection.
The officer driving the Explorer was transported by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. The passenger was also transported by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. The passenger was a Hickory Police Department applicant.
The driver of the Odyssey, Cynthia Nicole Lail, passed away as result of her injuries at the scene. Her son, Michael Lail, was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Brenner Children’s Hospital by EMS, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday (September 10).
During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately three hours. Highway Patrol’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting the investigation.
