Morganton Man Stopped By Police, Charged With Drug, Firearm Offenses (Updated, 10:15 a.m., 3/13/24)

46-year-old Jeremiah Lane Hightower of Morganton was arrested by the Morganton Department of Public Safety. He’s charged with offenses including felony counts of possession of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a felon. Hightower is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, fictitious registration plate among other traffic offenses.

On Tuesday (March 12), a Public Safety Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for fictitious vehicle registration plate as well as a broken taillight. The driver, identified as Jeremiah Lane Hightower, was found to have a marijuana bowl. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of two grams of methamphetamine and a firearm. All items were seized for evidence. A records check showed Hightower to be a convicted felon.

Hightower was placed under arrest and he then told officers that he swallowed heroin and fentanyl. Burke EMS responded and transported Hightower to UNC Health Blue Ridge where he was placed under observation. The warrants against Hightower were served upon his release from the hospital. He was placed in the Burke County Jail this morning (March 13) following his release under no bond. A District Court date is set for Thursday (March 14).

Hightower is a convicted felon and has been charged with felony larceny and felony breaking & entering more than ten times apiece. He has also been charged with offenses including being an habitual felon and possession of schedule III controlled substance.
