Morganton Man Charged With Having Weapons Of Mass Destruction

41-year-old Joshua Phillip Steffey of Morehead Street Extension in Morganton was arrested Wednesday (May 24) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. He’s charged with two felony counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

On Wednesday at approximately 4 p.m., North Carolina Probation & Parole contacted the Morganton Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division regarding suspicious firearms that were found during a search. Probation Officers were conducting a search at the residence of Joshua Phillip Steffey on Morehead Street Extension when the weapons were discovered.

Public Safety Investigators responded and they determined that the two firearms had been modified. Steffey was then arrested and charged. He was brought to the Burke County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond. He was not listed as an inmate as of earlier today (May 26). The next District Court date is scheduled for June 15. The case is still under investigation, and additional charges may be pending.
