On January 7, Deputies received a report regarding a robbery at a private residence on Propst Road, outside the Morganton city limits. The victim alleged that a man she met through Facebook Marketplace came to her residence and attempted to trade a fake gold coin for jewelry. When the victim noticed the coin was fake, the suspect grabbed all the jewelry and fled from the residence.
Detectives identified the suspect as Brandon Scott Meeks, who was using a false name on Facebook Marketplace. A warrant was issued for Meeks’ arrest, and he was taken into custody without incident on January 19.
Bond was set at $10,000, secured. He is not currently listed as an inmate in Burke County. Meeks will appear in District Court on February 12 in Morganton.
The Sheriff’s Office has recently received numerous reports of scams through Facebook Marketplace and other websites. Citizens are encouraged to use caution when meeting with individuals from the internet. It is recommended that meetings take place in a well-lit public area with other people present.
