Morganton Man Charged In Connection To Chase

43-year-old Christopher Lee Moffitt of Wall Street in Morganton was arrested Monday (May 6) by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and misdemeanor possession of stolen property. He’s also charged on a felony bench warrant from South Carolina.

On Monday, Burke County Sheriff’s Office Investigators were patrolling the area of US-64 and Mill Race Road in Morganton. Officers saw a Honda Civic displaying a fictitious license plate and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop and began accelerating toward Morganton on US-64, then turned onto Interstate-40, heading toward Hickory, reaching speeds of over 110 miles per hour.

The vehicle continued driving well above the posted speed limit and recklessly passed numerous vehicles on the Interstate. After speed reached 110 miles per hour and traffic was heavy, the Sheriff’s Office discontinued the pursuit around mile marker 114. Shortly after discontinuing the pursuit, the vehicle was found parked on the Exit 116 off-ramp and witnesses told officers the occupants ran into a nearby wooded area.

After approximately an hour of searching, deputies found Christopher Lee Moffitt and a female passenger on Piney Mountain Street, Hickory, and detained both subjects. Moffitt was then taken into custody and charged with the felony offenses. He was placed in the Burke County Jail under $75,000 secured bond. A District Court date is scheduled for May 24.
