A man was killed in a crash in Burke County Wednesday (January 4). More details have been released on this incident, which was first reported Thursday (January 5) on WHKY. The deceased is 63-year-old Robert Ernest Bowden of Morganton.
On Wednesday at approximately 5:40 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to U.S. 70 near Brandon Road. A 2000 Volkswagen passenger car was traveling west on U.S. 70, crossed the centerline, and collided head-on with an eastbound 2013 Toyota Highlander.
The driver of the Volkswagen, Robert Ernest Bowden, passed away as a result of his injuries at the scene. He was not restrained by a seatbelt. The driver of the Toyota, a 54-year-old Morganton resident, and a passenger were transported by Burke County EMS to UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton with non-life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation indicates reckless driving prior to the collision on the part of the Volkswagen as a contributing circumstance. U.S. 70 was closed in the area for over an hour during the on-scene investigation.
