Mooresville Mayor Announces September 30 Departure
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WHKY) — Mooresville’s mayor says he will step away from office at the end of this month following months of pressure from town commissioners.
Mayor Chris Carney announced near the end of Tuesday night’s Board of Commissioners meeting that his last day will be September 30. Carney described the move as retirement and said he had completed the list of goals he and his wife established for his time in office.
Commissioners voted 4-2 in April to formally ask Carney to resign and approved a vote of no confidence. The dispute followed scrutiny of an October 2024 after-hours visit to Town Hall. Police responded after motion detectors were activated, and litigation followed over the town’s refusal to release surveillance video. A judge later ordered the footage released, but the town appealed.
Carney recommended that Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Qualls Dingler move into the position October 1. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for appointing the next mayor.
