Mooresville Man Charged with Murder in Connection with Nov. 18 Shooting

63-year-old Herbert Mark Potts of Midway Lake Road in Mooresville has been arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers on one felony count of first-degree murder.

He was arrested in connection with an incident just before 11 a.m. on November 18 when Deputies responded to the scene of a fatal shooting on the 200 block of Nance Farm Road near Mooresville. There, they found a white male, later identified as David Shane Nance, with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Nance was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. The scene was described as a makeshift gun range on private property.

Investigators learned that the 9-1-1 caller was Herbert Mark Potts, who identified himself as the shooter. Detectives interviewed Potts, who said the shooting occurred after an altercation between himself and Mr. Nance. An autopsy confirmed that Mr. Nance died as the result of two gunshot wounds to the chest.

An arrest warrant was issued charging Potts with first-degree murder. The suspect was arrested without incident yesterday (November 27) at his residence. Potts was placed in the Iredell County Detention Center where he is being held without bond. He’ll make a first appearance in District Court tomorrow.

Potts has a criminal history that includes misdemeanor injury to real property, misdemeanor taking fish illegally, and various driving-related charges.
