Mooresville Man Arrested After Domestic Disturbance Leads to Pursuits, K-9 Capture
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — An Iredell County man is facing numerous charges after deputies say a domestic disturbance led to two police pursuits and a K-9-assisted arrest.
According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a home on Woodwinds Drive in Mooresville at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday.
Investigators say 31-year-old Robert John Mazzullo became enraged during an argument and allegedly threatened a woman with a knife by holding it against her chest. Deputies say Mazzullo then took the victim’s vehicle without permission and fled the scene.
Deputy T. Pass obtained warrants charging Mazzullo with two counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Later that morning, Lt. J. Stutts located the stolen vehicle on Interstate 77 in Statesville. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but investigators say Mazzullo fled at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was terminated because of his reckless driving and heavy traffic.
A short time later, officers with the Mooresville Police Department attempted another traffic stop after locating the vehicle, but authorities say Mazzullo fled again. That pursuit was also called off due to public safety concerns.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned on Oak Brook Drive. Lt. N. Hodges deployed K-9 Levi, who tracked Mazzullo through a wooded area, where he surrendered without incident.
Deputies say Mazzullo suffered a medical emergency after being taken into custody. Authorities administered Narcan and performed CPR until Iredell County EMS arrived. He regained consciousness and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
After being medically cleared, Mazzullo was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger, speeding, driving while license revoked, improper passing, felony malicious conduct by a prisoner, and two counts of resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer.
Magistrate Thompson ordered that Mazzullo be held without bond on the Iredell County charges.
Authorities also served Mazzullo with outstanding warrants issued by the Mooresville Police Department, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, hit and run causing property damage and additional traffic-related offenses.
The Sheriff’s Office said Mazzullo was on probation at the time of his arrest for injury to personal property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
