A highway crash shut down the Interstate 40 bridge at Rock Barn Road in Catawba County Monday afternoon (August 10). According to published reports, at approximately 2:45 p.m., an 18-wheeler left the interstate, traveled up the embankment at exit 133 and then stopped with its front cab on Rock Barn Road.
The driver of the truck, a Florida man, and his dog escaped the crash without sustaining serious injuries. Traffic was slowed due to an earlier accident and the driver swerved right to avoid cars that had slowed down, resulting in the crash. The bridge at Rock Barn Road was closed for several hours.
The bridge was reportedly inspected and no issues were found. According to the published reports, the truck was carrying more than 40,000 pounds of meat.
