Meeting Scheduled For Tuesday In Hildebran To Discuss I-40 Project

The N.C. Department of Transportation invites the public to learn more about a proposed project to improve safety and traffic flow at the Interstate 40 interchange with Old N.C. 10 (Exit 118) in Burke County. The project would realign existing ramps and approaching roads.

The drop-in style meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22 at the First Baptist Church of Hildebran at 8831 Old N.C. 10. With no formal presentation, the public is invited to attend at any time. Project staff will be present for on-on-one discussions, to answer questions and receive comments.

Project details, including maps and a video, can be found on the NCDOT project web page:

People may also submit comments before Sept. 7, 2023 by phone at 984-205-6615 (enter project code 2301 to leave a message), email to, or mail Michael Clark, 55 Orange Street, Asheville, N.C. 28801.

An additional design (alternative) has been developed since a public meeting held in November, 2022. The additional alternative, available on the project website and at the meeting, includes the following: Old N.C. Highway 10 and I-40 ramps would connect via roundabouts on each side of I-40. Curleys Fish Camp Road would connect to the roundabout north of I-40 and Dowell Street would connect to the roundabout south of I-40. The connection of Martin Fish Pond Street to Old N.C. Highway 10 would be eliminated. A new connector road is proposed from Martin Fish Pond Street to Dowell Street.
