The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team earned its first home victory of the season by taking the series opener over Southern Wesleyan, 6-4.
Tyler McPeak, who led the Bears with 18 home runs in 2023, connected for LR’s first grand slam since Luis Atiles launched one back on April 23, 2022, against Lincoln Memorial.
Four of the graduate student’s five RBIs came from his second home run of the season. The Denver, N.C. native added another run batted in during the seventh inning with a sacrifice flyout to score Sal Carricato.
Joshua Lanham earned his second victory of the season by replicating his performance against Flagler a week earlier. In his first start at home, the redshirt senior tossed six innings with eight strikeouts and allowed only five hits.
The Bears also moved back into the win column after suffering their first defeat of the season, 13-5, against No. 2 North Greenville back on Feb. 7.
Carricato recorded his second multi-hit game of 2024. The redshirt junior knocked back-to-back singles in the fifth and seventh innings. Bryce Stober ended his four-game hitless streak with a two-hit performance. The senior recorded his first extra-base hit with a double in the third inning. Spencer Floyd recorded his second save of the season with a 0.2 innings pitched appearance. The junior struck out both batters that he faced. With a 13-strikeout performance, it is the third time this season that the Bears have notched 10+ strikeouts in a single game. With Zach Evans and McPeak’s home runs, it is also the third time this season that the Bears have connected for multiple home runs in a single game.
LR continues to hold a perfect all-time record against Southern Wesleyan, winning all six contests. The 6-4 result is the smallest margin of victory that the Bears have had against Southern Wesleyan. In the contests that have taken place in Hickory, Lenoir-Rhyne has outscored Southern Wesleyan, 49-11. The Bears have been solid on Fridays for the past two seasons, winning 10 of the past 12 contests dating back to the start of 2023. LR has held opponents to four runs or fewer in four of the first six games in 2024.
The Bears are 5-1 on the season. LR will continue its series against Southern Wesleyan with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 10. The first contest is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. Both games will be nine-inning contests.
