A weekend fire in Burke County claimed a man’s life. According to Burke County Fire Marshal Michael Willis, Saturday (February 6), shortly before 11 a.m., a fire was reported in the laundry room at 6909 Sam Huffman Road in Connelly Springs. Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes to find fire coming from the garage area of the residence. A resident of the home told first arriving firefighters that they beleived a man was still inside.
Firefighters conducted a search and extinguished the blaze. They found the victim, deceased in the laundry room/garage area of the home. He was identified as 77-year-old Gerald Edward Huffman. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and appears to be accidental pending further investigation.
Agencies responding to the fire included the George Hildebran, South Mountain and Salem Fire Departments, Icard Township Fire Rescue, the Enola and Cooksville Fire Departments, Burke County EMS, the Burke County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the SBI are assisting the Fire Marshal’s Office with the investigation.
