Man Charged With Stealing Items From Business At Knifepoint

34-year-old Jonathan Wayne Smith of Salisbury was arrested Thursday (February 2) by Troutman Police Officers. He’s charged with felony counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny by anti-inventory device, and possession of burglary tools along with a count of driving while license revoked.

On Thursday, officers with the Troutman Police Department responded to Lowe’s Home Improvement following a report regarding a subject who had concealed items in the store. The individual also walked out without paying was approached by loss prevention staff. When confronted by staff the subject reportedly pulled a knife out and challenged them to stop him, after which the individual got into a vehicle and began to leave.

Responding officers quickly found the vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot where Jonathan Wayne Smith was identified and placed under arrest. Smith is a convicted felon on post-release supervision and has an extensive criminal history including convictions for robbery, various assault offenses, and several similar larceny offenses.

Due to his status as a convicted felon, actions during this incident, and prior history, he was ordered held by a magistrate with no bond as authorities determined that he presents a danger to the public. Smith remained in the Iredell County Detention Center as of earlier today (February 6). A District Court date is scheduled for February 22.
