Man Charged With Discharging Weapon In Apartment

20-year-old Michael Keith Barber of Michaels Street in Morganton was arrested Saturday (April 20) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. He’s charged with felony discharge a weapon into occupied property along with misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property and injury to real property.

Public Safety Officers responded to an apartment on Michaels Street in Morganton to investigate the report of what sounded like a gunshot. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Michael Barber who told them his gun went off by accident. Police found the bullet inside the adjacent apartment which was occupied at the time.

Officials from the Morganton Housing Authority confirmed that Barber was not on the lease. Barber was transported to the Burke County Jail and charged with the previously listed offenses. Officers retrieved two firearms from the apartment. There were no injuries in the incident.

Barber was initially placed in jail under $10,000 secured bond. He was not listed as an inmate in Burke County today (April 23). A first appearance in court was scheduled Monday (April 22). His next District Court date is set for May 13.
