Man Charged in Connection to Hit & Run Collision

35-year-old Domenick Daniel Tagliavia of Catawba has been charged with felony hit & run, reckless driving, and improper passing. The charges are in connection to a hit & run collision on Friday, July 9.

At about 8:10 Friday morning, the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene in Catawba County on Sherrills Ford Road, near Slanting Bridge Road. A Chevy Suburban was traveling south on Sherrills Ford Road when the driver attempted to pass several vehicles in a no-passing zone. To avoid oncoming traffic, the driver ran off the roadway, lost control, and collided with a northbound 2018 Ducati motorcycle. The driver of the Suburban exited his vehicle in the Motts Grove United Methodist Church parking lot, spoke briefly to several witnesses, and then fled the scene in his vehicle.

The motorcycle’s driver, a 63-year-old Sherrills Ford man, was seriously injured. According to the Highway Patrol, he was expected to survive. No further updates on his condition are available.

Identification of the suspect, Domenick Daniel Tagliavia, was made possible by public response to a request for information that was shared by media outlets. Warrants were issued and Tagliavia turned himself in at the Catawba County Justice Center on Sunday evening (July 11). He was released after posting a $12,000 bond. Tagliavia was scheduled to appear in District Court yesterday (July 12) in Newton. No additional court dates are currently listed.
