Man Charged in Connection to Friday Murder in Connelly Springs (Updated, 6:23 a.m., 4/26/22)

22-year-old Nolan Andre Smith from an unspecified address in eastern Burke County has been charged in connection to the death of a man whose body was found Friday (April 22) in Connelly Springs. Smith has been charged with felony murder. As of 2 p.m. today (April 25), Smith had not been arrested.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday, Burke County Deputies were dispatched to an assault call at an address on Spaniel Street in Connelly Springs. When Deputies arrived, they found a white male lying in the street unresponsive with no pulse. Deputies started C.P.R. until Burke County E.M.S. arrived and pronounced the man deceased. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Jonathan Carl Ross of Morganton.

A warrant for Smith’s arrest has been issued. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the U.S. Marshals and requested assistance in locating Smith. The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the District Attorney’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office says additional information will be released when it becomes available.
