Man Arrested In Connection To Shooting In Newton

24-year-old Jernico Jayquan Linder of 20th Avenue Drive NE in Hickory was arrested Tuesday (September 8) by Newton Police Officers. He’s charged with felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, first degree burglary, and discharge a weapon into an occupied dwelling.

On Monday (September 7) shortly before 11 p.m., Newton Police responded to a reported shooting in the area of McDaniels Circle. Upon arriving at the scene, officers were told by witnesses that both the victim and suspect had left the area prior to officers’ arrival.

A witness identified the victim as a 25-year-old Newton man. The witness said the victim left the area as a passenger in a vehicle with an unknown driver. A short time later officers found the victim in a vehicle near the scene. He was being driven to the hospital by a friend. EMS was contacted and transported the man to Catawba Valley Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim told officers he was sitting inside his residence when a known suspect entered the house with a gun. He ran from the home and the suspect followed him outside and fired shots, striking him and a neighbor’s house. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Investigators from the Newton Police Department identified the suspect as Jernico Jayquan Linder. On Tuesday Linder turned himself in to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. His bond was set at $20,000 secured. He was not listed as an inmate in Catawba County today (September 10). A District Court date was scheduled Wednesday (September 9).
