Man Arrested In Connection To June Shooting

30-year-old Craig Alan Blackwell, Jr. of Reynolds Drive in Statesville was arrested Monday, (July 3) by authorities in Iredell County. He’s charged with felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm within the city limits. He’s also charged with misdemeanor counts of second-degree trespassing and resist, obstruct, and delay of an officer.

On Monday, a call was transferred to Iredell County Communication from the Statesville Police Department about a person trespassing at an address on East Greenbriar Road. When officers arrived they met with the caller, who told them a man was in her yard and he was refusing to leave.

Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies found the man described by the caller and began trying to talk with the suspect. When asked several times for his name and identification, the man refused to answer. The man was then taken into custody and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center.

A search of the detention center data record system identified the man as Craig Alan Blackwell, Jr. An additional criminal history search determined Blackwell had outstanding arrest warrants. The Statesville Police Department had sworn out felony arrest warrants against Blackwell for his role in a shooting several days earlier.

On June 24, 2023, the Statesville Police Department responded to Iredell Memorial Hospital in reference to a victim that had sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach. It was later determined that the shooting took place at an address on Garfield Street. The victim was subsequently transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem with life threatening injuries. Blackwell was identified as a suspect in the shooting.

Blackwell was jailed in the Iredell County Detention Center under $1,000,000 secured bond. He remained in jail as of earlier today (July 6). A District Court appearance is scheduled for July 25.
