LR Women’s Tennis Suffers First Setback of Season

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team suffered its first loss of the 2023-24 season with a 5-2 defeat to Anderson.

In doubles, the Bears got off to an excellent start as the combined team of Claudia Orsini and Runa Muderrisoglu won the No. 1 doubles match with a 6-1 victory. However, the Trojans went on to win the next two matches to clinch the doubles point and jump out to a 1-0 lead.

As the contest transitioned to singles, Muderrisoglu did not miss a beat as the freshman went on to capture a straight-set victory at the No. 1 line. The Duzce, Turkey native ended with perfect mark on the day with her 6-2, 6-4 result.

With the meeting squared up at one point apiece, Anderson started to get on a roll as the Trojans won four consecutive matches to power themselves past the Bears, and hand LR its first loss of the campaign.

While the match was already finalized, Alicia Wahlberg gave the Bears their second point of the afternoon with a victory at No. 3 singles.

The Stockholm, Sweden native took the first set, 6-4, before losing the second set with the reverse score. Ultimately, the senior prevailed in the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-4, to bring the match to its 5-2 final.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team will have a quick turnaround for its home opener against Johnson C. Smith. The match is scheduled to begin on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. from the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
