LR Track and Field Teams Off to Solid Start at NCAA Championships
Sprinter Dario Matau claimed the No. 1 seed in the 100m dash prelims and the women’s 4x100m relay team earned All-American status in day one of the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
Matau sprinted in 10.19 seconds to claim a spot in Saturday’s finals and earn the top spot in prelims. Matau earned a pair of National Runner Up finishes in the Indoor Championships in the 60m and 200m dash and will look to claim an individual National Championship on Saturday if he can repeat his performance in prelims.
The men’s 4x100m relay team posted a strong prelim with a time of 39.36 which was good for third. Jacob Wadsworth, Trent Davis II, Lucas Besong and Matau easily qualified for the final on Saturday.
The women’s 4x100m relay team became the first women’s relay team to ever reach nationals and had a strong showing. The team of Holly Kone, Alexis Brown, Melody Jones and Abigail Kinoshita finished 12th in prelims with a school record time of 45.65. Although they didn’t finish in the top nine to qualify for Saturday’s finals, the 12th place finish earned them Second Team All-American status.
Brown’s day wasn’t done as she came back and ran in the 100m sprint. Brown finished second in her heat with a time of 11.56 and was sixth between the two heats in prelims.
