LR Softball Splits a Pair of Games in Georgia

The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team split a pair of games at Columbus St. in the Red White Blue Classic hosted by Columbus St. The Bears dropped the opener to Union but rebounded to defeat the hosts in the nightcap.

Against Union, the Bears jumped out early with a 3-spot in the top of the first. Lora Beth Wood doubled in a pair and came in to score on a RBI base hit from Lani Warren. Union would get one run back on an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1 and pulled within one with an RBI double in the third. Heading into the sixth, LR led 3-2 but Union pushed across three runs on three hits to take the lead late. Wood finished the game with two hits, a run and two RBI. She was the only Bear with more than one hit. Abbey Nixon and Kaylan Brown stole bases. Alissa Russ gave up two runs in her three innings and Faith Carrigan suffered the loss in relief as she gave up three runs in 2.1 innings of work.

In game two, Columbus St. jumped ahead in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground out but Lauren Rakes settled down and put up four zeroes. The score stayed 1-0 until LR’s fifth inning when Adda Prescott tied it up with a solo bomb. A few batters later, Cassidy Wall smacked a three-run bomb to put the Bears up 4-1. Warren and Lauren Jackson added RBI base hits before Prescott recorded her second hit of the inning, a RBI single to left. Columbus St. would plate a pair on a 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth but Rakes would shut the door on the 7-3 win. Rakes finished with five strikeouts and five hits allowed in her seven innings.

Lauren Rakes earned her 48th career win in the circle in game two. With the win, Hollar runs her career win total to 975. Rakes is up to 636 career strikeouts and is just 37 shy of moving into fourth place in program history. The Bears have hit 12 home runs already this season.

Rakes added a pair of hits in the night cap. This was the first all-time meeting between LR and Union. The Bears improve to 12-8 all-time against Columbus St. This is the first of four games in the Red White Blue Classic.

The Bears return to action with two more games tomorrow. The first takes place at 2 p.m. against Tuskegee and close out the weekend with a matchup against Georgia College.
