LR Softball Place Two on First Team All-Region

Julia Mardigian and Lauren Rakes of the Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team were announced as First Team All-Southeast Region members by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday.

These accomplishments add to the list of successful feats over the past couple of weeks. The Bears are fresh off their first SAC Tournament Championship in 11 years and are preparing for their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Mardigian, the junior from Mechanicsville, Va., led the Bears with a .440 batting average in her 59 appearances. The second baseman also led the conference with 92 hits and 28 doubles.

Throughout the season, Mardigian only struck out four times at the plate in her team-high 209 at-bats. With that mark, she led the conference by striking out once in every 52.3 at-bats.

Rakes, the graduate student from Hamptonville, N.C., returned to her dual-threat status in the 2024 season. In the circle, Rakes led the team with 17 victories and 16 complete games as she pitched 159.1 innings. Her 196 strikeouts not only led the Bears, but it also was good enough to rank second in the conference.

In the batter’s box, Rakes led the team with 15 home runs and finished second on the team with a 1.159 OPS and a .739 slugging percentage. The utility/pitcher selection made 48 appearances for the Bears at the plate and 30 in the circle.

For the all-conference selections, both Mardigian and Rakes were named to the second team for their respective positions.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team will continue its postseason with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch against the No. 5 seeded Lander Bearcats on Thursday, May 9. LR will spend the opening weekend of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on the campus of Wingate University.
