LR Men’s Tennis Drop Third Straight Contest

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team ends its regular season on a three-match losing streak, as the Bears were defeated by Lincoln Memorial, 6-1.

There could not have been a better start to the match for the Bears as LR came out and won all three doubles lines to take the first point of the day. The No. 3 duo of Connor Donley and Nevio Dux had a comfortable 6-1 victory to get the ball rolling for the Bears.

While the other two doubles matches were more tightly contested, the No. 1 pair of Vadym Rogynskyi and Rufus Plane clinched the point with a 7-5 result. Meanwhile, not too far after, the No. 2 team of Mattias Selde and Zachary Cox secured a 7-4 tiebreak decision to come out with a 7-6 win.

As the Bears were hoping to see some of the momentum carry over from doubles, LR could not find its success in singles, losing all six lines. Four of those six matches were three-set outcomes.

In the first wave of LR players, Rogynskyi was able to erase a one-set deficit with a 6-3 second-set victory. However, in the third set, the sophomore came up short in a 6-4 decision.

Meanwhile for Raphael Champaud, the sophomore won his opening set, 7-5, before LMU’s Franco Battaglino took the second and third sets by an identical 6-3 result, sealing the come-from-behind victory.

In the two other three-set matches, Joel Hemmings and Plane each won their opening sets before falling in the second. Both men played a 10-point tiebreak instead of a traditional set, Hemmings lost his tiebreaker, 10-4, while Plane lost his tiebreaker, 10-7.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team will head down to Sumter, S.C. for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The competition will begin on Thursday, April 18 at 9 a.m. from the Palmetto Tennis Center. The Bears’ opponent is still yet to be determined.
