Newton-Conover City Schools Director of Exceptional Children, Jessica Sigmon, confirmed that Conover School will remain open for the upcoming school year. The school received a grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to keep operations in place. Previously the school system faced uncertainty after a funding change from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Back in April 2026 Superintendent Dr. Emily Shaw shared with WHKY “We found out back in late February that the developmental day license that are associated with the Conover School were no longer going to be renewed through the DHHS and what that means is that DPI can no longer issue the funding that’s associated with those license so we are at stake for losing about $600,000 if that license is not reinstated so we are going to have to really look at what does that mean for the Conover School losing over a half million dollars.”
