63-year-old Luther Dowdy of Lincolnton won a $235,001 jackpot Monday (October 17) in the North Carolina Education Lottery’s Cash 5 game. Mr. Dowdy, a NASCAR fan, bought three $1 Cash 5 tickets in tribute to Dale Earnhardt. Mr. Dowdy said it was the first time he had played the Cash 5 game and said he chose to buy three tickets to represent the number three on Earnhardt’s race car.
Mr. Dowdy, who works as a grave digger, bought his lucky Quick Pick tickets using Online Play on the lottery’s website. He matched all five white balls in Monday’s drawing to win the jackpot.
Mr. Dowdy arrived at lottery headquarters yesterday (October 19) to collect his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $166,875. He hopes to retire at the end of this year and will also use his winnings to pay off his mortgage and help a neighbor.
Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina that gives players the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or by using the N.C. Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night.
