42-year-old Joseph Eugene Jones of Victory Grove Church Road in Lincolnton was arrested on January 31 on a true bill of indictment for drug distribution conspiracy, distribution of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession with intent to distribute meth.
Jones was arrested in connection with a Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.) undercover operation that began in Lincoln County and led to a number of federal indictments handed down in South Carolina. The investigation began in September of 2022. During the investigation, Lincoln County Narcotics Investigators, including the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Homeland Security Task Force Officer, seized more than 14 kilograms of meth, eight firearms, and $27,000 in U.S. currency.
In December 2022, Lincoln County Investigators and other North Carolina law enforcement agencies provided information to the D.E.A. D.E.A. Agents in Greenville, S.C. then used that information to target suspects who were having drugs transported from Mexico to upstate South Carolina. The drugs were supplied by two fugitives who were in Mexico to avoid state charges. One of the suspects was later extradited back to Columbia, S.C., where he is incarcerated.
Through the course of the investigation, D.E.A. agents seized 159 pounds of meth from Greenville, Anderson, and Pickens counties in South Carolina and Lincoln County in North Carolina. The investigation concluded in November 2023 and resulted in federal indictments against ten people, including Jones.
