Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Downs Newberry
The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team earned the season sweep of Newberry with a 3-1 victory inside Shuford Arena on Tuesday night.
In their first action in a week, the Bears came out swinging in the first set. Led by four kills each from Emmaleigh Allen and Taylor Osborne, LR grabbed a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 win in the opener. The guests would storm out in the second set, taking nine of the first 10 points. However, the Bears had an answer with a 6-0 run to force a Newberry timeout. Trailing 21-18, the Bears would score three straight. However, after battling back, LR would drop the second set 26-24 to even the contest at 1.
LR would bounce back with wins in the third and fourth set by counts of 25-19 and 25-20 to claim the victory. The Bears used a balanced attack with five players in double figures in kills led by 14 from Kathy Peter who added six blocks. Allen had 12 kills and Aasia McNeill, Cheyenne Clonch and Osborne each had 11. Sydney Karjala had a huge performance with 48 assists and a career-high 30 digs. Lyndsie Warren and Osborne added 16 digs each.
The Bears have won six straight at home and have also won six in a row overall against the Wolves.
LR will play host to four straight home Tuesday night games.
The Bears are 12-5 overall, 6-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will return to action on Friday night when they travel to Limestone for a 7 p.m. match.
