Lenoir-Rhyne’s Lucy Whelan has been named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for matches played during week four of the 2023 season, the Conference announced today.

Whelan, a graduate student from Aberdeen, Scotland, went an impressive 4-0 on the week for the Bears, picking up a pair of singles wins, and a pair of doubles wins. Whelan picked up strong wins at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-4 versus Lees-McRae and 6-3 versus Francis Marion. Whelan was moved up the ladder to play at No. 2 singles in her match against Lees-McRae and picked up an impressive 6-4, 6-2 win. She picked up another victory at No. 3 singles in a three-set 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win against Francis Marion.

This is Whelan’s first Player of the Week selection this season.
