Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Snaps Losing Streak With Road Win
The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team snapped its three-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Coker.
The match did not have the ideal start for the Bears as the Cobras were able to secure the doubles point by taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Evgeniya Pugina and Sandy Mitsou, the No. 2 doubles team, were able to pull out a 6-3 win.
For most of the five singles victories for LR, they were resounding, straight-set victories. But at the No. 2 line, Alicia Wahlberg found herself down after the opening set with a 1-6 score. The junior was ultimately able to recover and dominate the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2 to take the match.
Pugina had an intense opening set at No. 1 singles as the sophomore edged it out, winning the set tiebreaker in a 9-7 result. The sophomore eventually went on to take the match after winning 6-4 in the second set.
At No. 4 singles, Natalie Lutz had a great start to her match by taking the first set with a 6-2 score. It was not easier the second time around for the senior, but she still managed to pull out a 7-5 result to secure the match.
Lucy Whelan and Mitsou both had the most convincing victories on the afternoon. At the No. 3 line, Whelan shut down any chance for Angelina Krieg in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, for Mitsou, she handled Sydnee Foster in a 6-3, 6-2 final.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will return to Hickory, N.C. to begin a four-game home stand on Friday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. The Bears will begin the stretch by taking on Tusculum at the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
