Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Gets Home SAC Win

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team improves to 2-0 on the season in conference play with their 6-1 victory over Emory & Henry on Wednesday.

After building off their success on Sunday, the Bears returned with top to bottom excellent tennis, which started by sweeping the Wasps in all three doubles matches.

The Bears also had mirrored success in their singles matches, winning five of the six contests. In those five victories, the Bears did not drop a single set.

There were three matches where a Bear was able to hold an opponent to one game or less. And then there was reigning SAC Women’s Tennis Player of Week Lucy Whelan at No. 3 singles, who blanked her opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Alicia Wahlberg and Natalie Lutz were the other two who also breezed towards convincing victories with 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Evgeniya Pugina started off her match at No. 1 singles by getting a crucial break in the first set over Sabina Chernega, and then silenced her opponent in the second set en route to a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

Filling in for Jessica Fuchs at No. 6 singles, Dawson Clifford didn’t let her teammates down with a controlling 6-2, 6-4 victory over Millie Turner; Fuchs was able to participate in Doubles No. 3 in which her and Evelin Menyhart were able to shut out their opponents in a 6-0 result.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will return to the YMCA of Catawba Valley on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. for a non-conference match against the Erskine Flying Fleet.
