Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Falls to Erskine
The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team was on the losing end of another 4-3 thriller at home on Saturday, this time in the hands of the Erskine Flying Fleet.
When the Bears have played at home this season, they have suffered three losses – each decision resulting in the same final score.
LR was able to snatch the doubles point off their incredible displays at the No. 1 and No. 3 lines.
The top team of Alicia Wahlberg and Lucy Whelan was able to coast their way to a 6-1 victory while the third doubles team of Evelin Menyhart and Natalie Lutz took care of business with a 6-2 result.
In singles, four out of the six matches went into a decisive third set. The Flying Fleet performed just a little better in these matches, winning three of the four, which was the difference maker in the outcome.
The one three-set match where LR came out on top was the battle at No. 1 singles, between Evgeniya Pugina and Emma Bentz. After losing the first set in a 5-7 decision, the sophomore rallied in the next two sets, winning 6-1, 6-4 to take the victory.
Wahlberg also added onto her doubles victory with an impressive two-set victory at No. 2 singles. The junior had a tale of two sets with a commanding 6-0 first set win before squeezing by Ariana Jativa in the second set, 7-6.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will return to the YMCA of Catawba Valley on Wednesday, March 8 to take on Carson-Newman at 1 p.m. This match will conclude the five-game home stand, the longest of the season.
