Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Edges Out Newberry

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team tallied its fourth consecutive victory with a 4-3 thriller over Newberry.

The top four singles lines came in the clutch as all four spots earned straight-set victories. However, none were bigger than the No. 2 line as Claudia Orsini sealed the match with her 6-3, 7-6 (7) victory.

While the sophomore was able to clinch the Bears’ fifth conference victory of the season, Alicia Wahlberg got the wheels going with her commanding 6-0, 6-1 win. With the result, she remains perfect on the year with a 12-0 singles record.

With the match squared away at one apiece, Runa Muderrisoglu tallied her eighth-straight singles victory with another straight-set win. The freshman put together a solid 6-3, 6-1 result to give LR the 2-1 advantage.

The lead did not last long for the Bears as Newberry posted back-to-back wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles line, putting the Wolves on the verge of victory.

Fortunately, another freshman, Nellie Wahlberg persevered through the pressure as she came away with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The Stockholm, Sweden native continues her winning ways as she has now won six consecutive matches.

With that victory, it was able to set up Orsini, who put the match away to keep the Bears perfect at home.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will have the weekend off before the Coker Cobras make their appearance at the YMCA of Catawba Valley. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
