Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Edges Out Coker

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team picked up their fifth-straight victory with another thrilling outcome, as the Bears outperformed the Coker Cobras, 4-3.

To start the match, Runa Muderrisoglu and Claudia Orsini controlled the No. 1 doubles contest with a 6-2 victory, however, Coker took the No. 3 line, 6-1, to bring the first point of the match down to No. 2 doubles.

Fortunately for the Bears, Alicia Wahlberg and Nellie Wahlberg took care of business with a 6-2 victory to give LR the early 1-0 advantage.

After manufacturing another doubles victory, Muderrisoglu built up the Bears lead with a 6-3, 6-1 result. The freshman has now recorded 10 wins at the No. 1 singles line this season.

While the Cobras secured their first point of the match at No. 5 singles, Nellie Wahlberg persevered in No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory. In her first time playing at the third singles spot since Feb. 10, the freshman now improves to 11-1 on the season and has a seven-match winning streak.

On the other hand, her sister, Alicia, took a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles to secure LR’s sixth home win of the year. The senior from Stockholm, Sweden, is now 13-0 on the season with her 6-4, 6-2 victory.

With the 4-3 result, LR has now won three of the past four matches with that outcome. In the program’s 11 victories this year, five matches were decided by that final score.

While the five-match home stand ends, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team begins a four-match road stretch with a conference battle against Tusculum. That contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Friday, March 29 in Greeneville, Tenn.
