Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Edges Out Catawba

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team earned its second consecutive road victory as the Bears prevailed, 4-3, over the Catawba Indians.

The Bears started off the match by collecting the first point of the day with two doubles victories.

LR collected wins in the top two lines, winning by the identical score of 6-2. For No. 1 doubles, Claudia Orsini and Runa Muderrisoglu won their sixth-straight match while the No. 2 team of Alicia Wahlberg and Nellie Wahlberg won their fourth consecutive match.

After Catawba recorded the first singles victory at the No. 2 line, Alicia Wahlberg got one back for the Bears with a straight-set win. The senior from Stockholm, Sweden improves to 16-0 on the season with her 6-3, 6-2 result.

As the match continued to swing back and forth, Muderrisoglu recaptured the lead for the Bears in a three-set thriller. The freshman from Duzce, Turkey opened her contest with a 7-5 first-set victory before Catawba’s Anna Wise responded with a 6-2 second-set win.

In the final set, the two pushed each other to the distance to force a decisive tiebreaker. Fortunately for the Bears, Muderrisoglu squeezed by with a 7-5 tiebreak victory to earn the 3-2 lead.

Right after Muderrisoglu won her 12th-straight match, her fellow freshman, Nellie Wahlberg secured the victory for the Bears with a straight-set win.

The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden took the match, 6-4, 6-4, to earn her 10th win of the season at the No. 4 spot.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will conclude its road schedule with a showdown against the No. 13 Wingate Bulldogs. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m. from Wingate, N.C.
