Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Defeats Lincoln Memorial

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team squeezed out a 4-3 victory over Lincoln Memorial in their regular season finale.

Replacing Evgeniya Pugina at the No. 1 singles spot, Alicia Wahlberg pulled out a straight-set victory over Sophia Aray. The junior did not skip a beat with the late change as she controlled the match in a 6-4, 6-2 outcome.

The Stockholm native contributed in a massive way in doubles as Lucy Whelan and herself won their fifth match in a row in a 6-3 win.

With the doubles point on the line, both teams were squared away at one. Coming down to No. 3 doubles, Evelin Menyhart and Natalie Lutz powered themselves through the decisive tiebreaker to clinch the massive point for LR.

After that riveting match, Menyhart found herself in another tight showdown with Haley White at No. 5 singles. The senior took the first set in a convincing 6-1 result but found herself on the losing end of the second set in a 6-3 score. But fortunately for the Bears, the Budapest native pulled through in the final set by a 6-4 mark.

Another factor of the late substitution, Jessica Fuchs filled in at the No. 6 singles line, and pulled out the crucial 6-4, 6-2 victory to clinch the match for the Bears. It is the freshman’s first singles win since March 23 against the then No. 12 ranked Newberry.

Up next for the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team is the SAC Women’s Tennis Tournament. The Bears clinched the No. 7 seed and will face the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinal round. The match is scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. start on Thursday, April 20 from the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
