Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Bounced From SAC Tournament

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team had its SAC Tournament run cut short with a 4-2 loss to No. 31 Newberry in the quarterfinal round.

At the start of the match, the Bears fell into a hole after losing the No. 1 doubles line, 6-2. However, the other two doubles matches went the distance as the No. 2 and No. 3 lines went to a decisive tiebreaker.

In the No. 2 spot, Alicia Wahlberg and Nellie Wahlberg prevailed with a 7-5 tiebreak victory. Unfortunately, the No. 3 line fell short in its tiebreaker with a 7-1 result. By taking two out of the three lines, Newberry snatched an early 1-0 advantage.

After the Wahlberg sisters found their success in doubles, their momentum carried forward into singles as both captured a win at their respective lines.

Nellie Wahlberg, who ended the regular season with a four-match win streak, took control of the No. 4 line with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Alicia Wahlberg, who led the team with 16 regular season victories, had to overcome some adversity after falling short in the opening set, 6-1. However, the senior flipped the script by taking the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1, en route to a win at the No. 3 spot.

After Newberry took the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, the result was going to come down to the top two singles lines. While both of those matches went to a critical third set, the Wolves took the No. 2 line to clinch the victory and a spot in the semifinal round.

With the loss, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team has a 14-5 overall record. Earlier in the week, the Bears were listed as one of the nine teams in the first edition of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings. LR will now wait and see if its season will continue at a later date.
