Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Soccer Picks Up First Win of Season

After playing to a draw in their first two games of the year, The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Soccer Team broke through for their first victory of the year with a 3-0 win over visiting Lees-McRae inside the Moretz Sports Athletic Campus Wednesday evening. Kara Gavaghan, Ria Acton and Alexis Cagno all scored for the Bears. LR will now prepare for their SAC opener at home against Tusculum on Saturday night.

The Bears got their first goal on a long double pass from Skylar Noll to Leonie Proessl then Proessl tapped to Gavaghan to get the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

That was only goal the Bears needed as LR did not allow a goal for the second straight game as the Bears only allowed six shots as Kristin Oliver made three saves for the Bears in goal this evening.

Acton doubled the lead with her first goal of the season as Acton scored off a free kick just outside the box late in the first half.

Cagno scored her first career goal in the 79th minute as Acton pass set up freshman to give the Bears the 3-0 win. The Bears out shot the Bobcats 27-6 on the evening.

Lees-McRae did have 4 corner kick opportunities but could not get a ball pass Oliver and the Bears defense.

LR moves to 9-0-1 in its last ten games against Lees-McRae. Last year the two teams opened the season with a 2-2 tie. The Bears have not allowed a goal since the 12th minute of the first game of the season. A streak of over 258 minutes of action.

Lees-McRae opened their season against four straight SAC teams. The Bobcats are 0-3 so far and have yet to score a goal. Acton’s goal was her 22nd career goal. She is five goals away from moving into 10th in program history.

UP NEXT: The Bears will open SAC play when they host Tusculum Saturday night with a 7:30 kickoff.
