The No. 15 Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Soccer Team surged past Wingate 2-1 in an overtime thriller decided by a late Kara Gavaghan winner Thursday evening.
The match started off scoreless throughout the first half. Wingate led LR 4-3 in shots in the first half.
Gavaghan would open the game in the 71′ scoring off an assist from Amanda Macfarlane and Allie Zueger. Wingate would answer in the 74′ to equalize the game 1-1 off a goal from McKenna Delong.
The match would go to overtime, but Gavaghan would take advantage of a cross by Allie Zueger and guide it in the goal for the game winner in the 93′.
Wingate outshot LR 13-5 in the match but Bears netminder and Hickory High grad Grayson Cameron collected four saves on the match. With those four saves today Cameron now sits in third in the SAC conference with 37 saves.
With the two assists, Zueger now moves into sole possession of 1st in the SAC in assists with seven.
The Bears now move to second place in their pod. and are 6-1-1 overall, 5-1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne will be back in action Monday April 5th at home for the quarterfinal of the SAC tournament against Carson-Newman at 5:00 p.m.
