Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Lacrosse Lose Heartbreaker in Double Overtime to Conference One-Loss Newberry

The host Newberry Wolves scored the final five goals of the game to erase a 10-6 deficit to steal a victory in double overtime over Lenoir-Rhyne, 11-10. Chloe Christensen led the Bears with three goals and an assist and Kaitlyn Cavanaugh and Jolan Morey each tallied three points for the Bears. Teanna Sieben broke her own program record for saves in a game with 21, topping her previous mark of 19 against Young Harris earlier this season.

Newberry scored first but the momentum swung LR’s way as the Bears closed the first quarter on a 4-0 scoring run. Alexa Burghardt scored the first goal of the evening for LR and Christensen made it 2-0. Burghardt and Ellie Campbell closed out the first quarter scoring. Newberry used a 3-1 run to open the second quarter to cut it to 5-4 but the Bears had another answer. Cavanaugh and Christensen (2) ignited a 3-0 scoring spurt to close out the first half and put LR up 8-4 going into the break.

Offenses stalled in the third quarter with Newberry scoring the lone goal in the 15-minute frame to cut it to 8-5. Newberry made it 8-6 just 58 seconds into the fourth quarter before LR’s Morey and Cavanaugh went back-to-back to make it 10-5.

Unfortunately, LR would be kept off the board from the 10:28 mark of the fourth quarter on as the Wolves stormed back. Newberry scored twice in the final 2:16, including the equalizer with 1:28 to go, to force OT. Neither team scored in the first OT period but Emma Jobs’ 18th goal of the season was the game-winner for Newberry at the 2:03 mark of the second OT period.

Ellie Campbell led LR with three caused turnovers and five draw controls and added a goal while Isabelle Dunnam had four ground balls and a caused turnover. Sieben was fantastic all evening with her 21 saves and 65.6 save percentage.

This is the second straight season LR fell to Newberry in overtime. The Bears now need UVA Wise to lose on Saturday in order to earn the number four seed and host a SAC Quarterfinal game.

Sieben now owns the first, second and is tied for the third most saves in a single game. She also recently set the record for career saves. LR drops to 3-3 on the road this season.

This was the first loss at Setzler Field in series history. LR is 11-2 all-time against Newberry.

The Bears are 7-10 overall, 6-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will look forward to South Atlantic Conference Tournament play that opens next Tuesday in the Quarterfinal round. Opponent and location are to be determined.
