Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Lander
Despite a furious comeback attempt, the Lenoir-Rhyne women’s lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to Lander on Wednesday afternoon. LR fell down 8-2 but only allowed two second half goals but ultimately fell to the Bearcats by a final of 10-7.
Kaitlyn Cavanaugh started the scoring at the 13:05 mark off an assist from Hannah Shuren to get the Bears the early advantage. After back-to-back goals from the Bearcats, Chloe Christensen evened the score with 10:11 left in the first quarter.
However, the visitors took the upper hand with a 6-0 run to close out the first half. Emmy Peterson scored twice and four others scored one time in the run. Christensen completed the hat trick with a pair of goals early in the third quarter as the Bears pulled within five at 9-4.
Ellie Campbell scored to end the third quarter to make it 9-5. LR’s comeback attempt continued with back-to-back goals in a 40 second span from Cambrie Cochran and Campbell made it 10-7 with 6:05 left in the game.
However, neither team would score in the final 6:05 to close out the game. Christensen finished with three goals and Campbell netted a pair. Shuren finished with three assists. Teanna Sieben finished with nine saves and Christensen added three caused turnovers.
This was the second season LR opened the year with a six-game home stand. The Bears started with six straight to open 2020.
With her two caused turnovers, Isabelle Dunnam became the program’s all-time leader passing Claire Wach with 96 CT’s. Sieben moved her career save total to 513 as she sets her sights on Ines Flueck’s career mark of 606.
This is just the second meeting between these two programs, both occuring in the past two seasons.
The Bears are 2-4 on the season. L-R will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Coker for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday night.
