Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Wins 12th Straight to Open Season

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Team moved to 12-0 on the season with a 78-70 victory Saturday afternoon in Anderson. LR also moved to 4-0 in SAC play for the first time since they started 5-0 in 2012-13 season. Five Bears scored in double figures lead by Emily Harman’s 19 points. Harman scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half to help the Bears extend their winning streak to a dozen.

Neither team had a lead over one possession in the first quarter as the teams went up and down the court. The Bears led 26-25 after one. Freedom High School grad Blaikley Crooks hit all five of her shots in the first quarter, a layup, two three’s and a pair of free throws en route to ten first quarter points to lead the Bears.

The Bears scored eight of the first ten points in the second quarter to race out to a seven point lead with 5:23 lead in the half. Anderson cut the lead to four as the Bears held a 41-37 lead at half. LR shot 52.2% from the floor and hit 13 of 15 free throws in the half.

A Hannah Stull layup with 5:33 left in the third quarter gave the Bears a 12 point lead, which would be their biggest of the game. Anderson made one last run, cutting the lead to eight after the third quarter, then cut the lead to one possession after a Xan Rowland three pointer with 7:41 left.

However, the Bears went on a quick 7-0 run to extend the lead back to 10 thanks to a three by Harman and back-to-back baskets by Jalen Gathers Azariah Fields and Crooks than hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to ice the game and give the Bears their 12th straight win to start the season.

Stull had a season high in points (13) and rebounds (7) on the afternoon. Stull also went 7-9 from the free throw line. Harman pitched in five steals to go with her 19 points. Crooks (16) Gathers (15), and Fields (12) joined Stull and Harman in double digits. Gathers scored her 15 points in just thirteen minutes off the bench.

This is the Bears first win in Anderson since January 20th, 2018. LR had lost the last four games before ending the streak in this contest. Harman has averaged 28.0 per game against Anderson in her career including a career high 39 points in last years 64-57 win in Hickory.

The Bears are second in SAC in FT% at 77.6 while the Trojans are last hitting just 56.4% of their free throws. Bears hit 25-31 (80%) today while Anderson went only 7-13 in the contest (53.8%). The trio of Crooks, Harman and Hudson have reached double figures in points in all but one game each this season.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 12-0 overall, 4-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears will head to Mt. Olive for a Monday matinee. Tip-off is schedule for 2:00 for this non-conference tilt.
