Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Upsets 12th Ranked Catawba

For the second straight home game, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball team took down a top 25 team. On Wednesday, the Bears defeated #12 Catawba 81-66 behind 20 points from Mikeba Jones. Jones went 14-17 from the free throw line to help the Bears to their third top-25 upset of the season and second straight inside the Shu. Blaikley Crooks added 19 points while Jayda Glass had 12 points and a career high five steals.

Catawba came out firing on all cylinders as the Indians scored the first eight points of the game. Bears did respond to score 18 of the next 27 points to take an 18-17 lead after ten minutes. LR extended the lead to 41-32 at halftime after forcing 12 first half turnovers. Crooks had 11 points in the first half to lead the Bears while Jones had 9 points.

Catawba could not cut the lead into single digits in the third quarter as the Bears stretched their lead to 17 points in the frame. The Indians finally got the lead under ten at 67-59 with 7:17 to play but an 8-0 run by the Bears capped by three-pointer by Lindstrom,ended any chance at a comeback from the Indians. Catawba went just 2-11 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter and just 4-20 in the game while the Bears hit 43% of their three-pointers.

Catawba had 25 turnovers in the game as the Bears scored 33 points off the Indians miscues. Jones also lead the Bears with seven rebounds while Tilda Lindstrom had six. Bears shot exactly 50% from the field in the first three quarters but just 36% in the fourth.

The home team has won six straight in this matchup after the Bears upset. This is the 7th straight time at least one of these teams have been ranked heading into the game. The team ranked is just 2-5 in those seven games. Bears have upset Catawba four times in that span. Emily Harman became just the 9th player in program history to score 1400 points in her career. Harman had two steals on the night and that moves her into 10th place in program history. Jones has scored double digits in five straight after 20 points. LR moves to 3-1 against top 25 teams this year. Bears remain one game behind Catawba for the SAC lead.

The Bears are 17-7 overall, 12-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. Mars Hill comes into town on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 tip-off inside the Shu.
