Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Falls to Fourth Ranked Catawba

Fourth ranked Catawba outscored the Bears, 21-8, in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Team, 71-56, in the SAC opener. Blaikley Crooks led the Bears with 21 points while Mikeba Jones and Emily Harman added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Bears will return home on Saturday, Dec. 9, for their SAC Home Opener against Emory & Henry.

The Bears jumped out to an early 8-2 run, but most of the first quarter was played within a possession as Catawba took a two-point lead into the second quarter. Catawba had a six-point lead in the second quarter before the Bears tied it up at 28 with 1:59 left to go in the half. The Indians then went on a 7-0 run to close out the half and take a 35-28 lead.

Jayda Glass hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the third quarter to get within two at 50-48 with 10 minutes left to play. However, that is the closest the Bears would get as Catawba scored nine of the first 12 points in the final quarter to race out to a 61-55 lead with 5:06 left to play. The Bears could not mustard a late run as Catawba grew their lead to the largest of the game. The Indians hit 7-9 from the free throw line in the final frame to defeat the Bears, 71-56.

With the win, Catawba snapped their two-game losing streak to the Bears. Salisbury has been a tough place for the Bears as LR has lost four straight games inside Goodman Gym.

Harman’s final bucket of the night put her over 1200 career points. LR’s last two SAC openers had gone to overtime.

Bears shot 41% from the floor but went just two for nine in the fourth quarter. Jones led the Bears with seven rebounds while Tilda Lindstrom had six. Harman handed out six dimes and had four rebounds.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Team are 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears will have a week off until they return home to face Emory & Henry. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. from Shuford Arena.
