Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Edges UNC-Pembroke on the Road

The Trio of Blaikley Crooks, Emily Harman and Mikeba Jones combined for 45 of the Bears 58 points as the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball team downed UNC Pembroke 58-51 on Sunday evening. Jones added ten rebounds for her first career double-double. Bears hit 23 of 26 free throws on the night to help them rebound and moved to 3-2 on the season.

In the first half, the Braves took a four-point lead into the second quarter after shooting 40% in the opening frame. Bears started slow shooting just 3-15 in the first ten minutes. After UNC Pembroke took a 17-10 lead with 8:01 left in the half, the Bears scored 14 of the last 21 points as the teams went into the break tied at 24. Only four Bears scored in the first half lead by 9 from Crooks. Despite shooting 27% from the floor the Bears hit all six free throws in the half.

In the second half, both teams shot over 50% in the third quarter as the Bears opened a seven point lead but saw the lead shrink to four thanks to a buzzer beater by Kalaya Hall to end the quarter. After the Braves cut the lead to one possession with 1:58 left, Landsiedel got a steal and layup to push the lead back to two possessions. Bears went on to hit 6-7 from the free throw line to seal their third victory of the season.

Crooks had 18 points on 5-15 shooting and added three steals on the evening. Harman had 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. She is 30 points away from 1200 career points. Tilda Lindstrom added 7 points and eight rebounds. Jones was the only Bear to score off the bench as Jones went 3-5 from the floor and perfect 6-6 from the line.

This was the Bears first trip to Pembroke since the 2018 season. This contest was also the 10th career match up between programs. Bears are 8-2 against the Braves after tonight’s win. Megan Landsiedel had a career high 13 points in last year 71-48 win in Hickory. LR is 2-0 after coming off a loss this season.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 3-2 on the season. The road trip continues with a visit to Converse for a 5:00 PM tip-off on Wednesday.
