In December of last year, Lenoir-Rhyne added weightlifting as a club sport for this school year. This past weekend, Ryan Grimsland dominated in the 67kg bodyweight competition, winning the bronze medal at the Uzbekistan Online World Cup.
Grimsland placed third and was beat out by a bronze medalist of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. At only 18 years old, Grimsland is the number one 67kg athlete in America and is an up-and-coming contender for the Olympic games in 2024 to be held in Paris. Grimsland is from Lewisville, NC.
Head Coach Travis Mash commented on Ryan’s performance.
“Ryan’s Bronze Medal performance in the Uzbekistan Online World Cup was a 9kg/20lb personal record that I attribute directly to the support of the team that we have established at Lenoir-Rhyne University, ” Coach Mash said, “We have three athletic goals as a team, win the University National Championship, consistently Create Athletes for Team USA and produce Olympians.”
Coach Mash also mentioned how the program is going so far at LR.
“Beyond athletics, our priorities are to have the highest GPA on campus,” Coach Mash said, “We want to create individuals that will add to society and teach others to cooperate as one on a team, which in turn becomes capable of greatness.”
